Welcoming Back Baracuta

Here in the Number Six store, we’ve just received our AW17 selection of jackets from the team over at Baracuta. To make the most of this long-awaited return, we’ve put together a bit of a write up looking at what makes a Baracuta jacket so legendary.

”An instantly recognisable silhouette”

It’s safe to say that brothers John and Isaac Miller knew exactly what to do when it came to crafting a truly British raincoat. Starting in Manchester in 1937, this timeless bit of outerwear has grown into something much more than just a decent jacket. It’s become an icon, an instantly recognisable silhouette, and an authentic piece of British heritage.

The Baracuta G9 jacket is the original Harrington jacket you’ve probably been seeing since right back in the day. With its two-button collar, pockets that sit at just the right height, the umbrella back vent, and the ribbed waist and cuffs, there’s no mistaking a proper G9 when you see one. They’ve been clothing everyone right across history: from Elvis to Steve McQueen, and even The Clash during their 1981 Times Square gig.

“Designed to help you fight the elements”

Since remastering and adapting the G10 jacket, it’s regained its title as the ultimate in British rainwear. Designed to help you seamlessly fight the elements, it’s a utilitarian, single-breasted jacket that’s now crafted using water-resistant Waxed cotton from Halley Stevensons of Scotland. If you’re unfamiliar with Halley Stevensons, they’ve been weatherproofing fabric since 1864, and it’s a seriously impressive process. The Baracuta G10 jacket was brought back from the archives with a new slimmer fit, a twill satin sleeve lining, and the unmistakeable Fraser Tartan body lining.

The Fraser Tartan was first brought in during the late 30s when the Miller brothers took a trip to visit the Fraser clan in Scotland. They spoke with the head, Lord Lovat, and the rest is history. The permission was granted to use the tartan as their lining, and it’s remained the same ever since.

“A Baracuta will do you justice”

Each and every jacket is still made in England, they keep things local, and we’ve got a lot of time for people who keep it close to home. We’ve brought in some great colourways this season: versatile and multi-functional in the extreme. You can change it up from heading into the office, heading to the pub, or meeting the family. A Baracuta will serve you well and do you justice.

This week we’ve also put together a window and table, have a look at some of the pictures here. It’s even better in person, so make sure you drop by the store if you’re in the area.
